How to Stop Drinking

If you want to know how to stop drinking then I will walk you through the process as it existed for me.  I would also add in here that I work in a treatment center and I see this process work for others too, though of course it does not work for everyone.

The first step in this process is that a person must make a firm decision to stop drinking and truly surrender.  Without this level of surrender, no real learning can take place and no ideas can be fully integrated into a person's life.  This surrender is like a great release.  You have to let go of everything and make way for new information to come into your life.  If you don't let go completely then you cannot really change.

The second step in this process is that you must ask for help.  This is important because the alcoholic will eventually realize that they cannot quit on their own.  If they could then they would not be an alcoholic.  If you really want to know how to stop drinking then realize that you need others to help you on your journey and you need to learn from them.  Embrace the idea of networking with others in early recovery and this will increase your chances for success.

Finally you must embrace the idea that you must eventually transition into long term recovery.  Long term sobriety is different from early recovery because your focus must shift towards one of holistic growth.  The main threat is no longer staying sober each day but instead you have to learn how to push yourself towards continuous growth.  You must do this in order to overcome complacency.  If you do not shift towards this personal growth strategy then you will eventually grow complacent and you run the risk of relapsing.

If you follow these basic strategies and put all of your effort into them then you will stay sober.  It is by no means an easy journey but it is one that is well worth taking.  Change  your approach and you can change your whole life.  Good luck.
